Brexit: Michael Ellis denounces the “implacable negativity” of Labor
London, Washington and Canberra have formed a new military pact, called AUKUS. The news was jointly announced on Wednesday by Joe Biden, Boris Johnson and Scott Morrison.
While not explicitly stated by members, analysts believe AUKUS is an attempt to contain possible Chinese aggression.
It will include cooperation on a range of projects, including cyber warfare, artificial intelligence and drones.
Britain and the United States have pledged to help Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.
However, this has infuriated France, as it means Australia is ending plans to buy French-built diesel submarines.
The EU has been excluded from a new UK / US / Australia alliance
The alliance was announced by Biden, Johnson and Morrison
Florence Parly, the French Defense Minister, described this as “a huge disappointment”.
A spokesperson for Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, said Brussels had not been given advance notice of the deal.
He said: âThe European Union has not been informed of this project and we are in contact to better understand this alliance.
âAn analysis of the situation and the repercussions of this alliance will be carried out and the next meeting of EU foreign ministers, scheduled for October 18 in Luxembourg, provides an opportunity for a discussion on this alliance.

“Biden made a brutal Trump-style decision”
The cancellation of the submarine’s contract sparked outrage from across the political spectrum in France.

The new AUKUS alliance was severely condemned by Beijing, which called it “extremely irresponsible”.
Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said the move could “seriously undermine regional peace.”
An editorial in the Global Times, a newspaper controlled by the ruling Communist Party of China, claimed that Australia had “turned into an adversary of China.”
After the announcement, Mr Johnson tweeted: âThe UK, Australia and the US form a new trilateral defense partnership that will safeguard global security and stability.
“It will also create hundreds of highly skilled jobs across the country, advancing our upgrading agenda.”
Mr. Morrison said: âToday Australia begins an enhanced trilateral security partnership with the United Kingdom and the United States to enable deeper cooperation on security and defense capabilities.
China reacted angrily to the new alliance
“This is a historic opportunity for our countries to strengthen the security of our nations in uncertain times.”
The new alliance has sparked calls in Europe for the EU to develop its own military capability.
Guy Verhofstadt, former European Parliament chief Brexit negotiator, said: âThe EU’s lack of hard power is a cornerstone for defending our interests around the world. Allies ignore us, opponents abuse us, citizens distrust us to ensure their safety. It is untenable.
“We need real EU defense, from intelligence to materiel to troops to safeguard our sovereignty.”
