The German Chancellor revealed that she was “worried” that compromises were becoming “more and more difficult” to find between Brussels and the Member States. In a farewell interview, Merkel expressed concern “that it is increasingly difficult” to find compromises between the countries of the European Union on major issues such as migration and the state of law. German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, Ms Merkel, said: “It is imperative to do everything possible to find a way to keep Europe united”.
She warned of growing reluctance to compromise and the rise of nationalism in countries like Poland and Hungary.
Ms Merkel added: “It is getting more and more difficult at the moment and I am quite worried.”
The German Chancellor described the political climate in Germany as becoming “harsher”.
She described this as a consequence of social media.
Ms Merkel said: “I fear that we have more and more problems with building compromises, which is essential in a democracy.”
Friday concluded what may be its last European Council meeting in Brussels.
She referred to the current difficulties between the EU and Poland regarding the rule of law.
She urged her political counterparts to seek compromises and defuse political conflicts within the union.

She added: “I admit that we are not yet as far advanced in securing the Schengen area as we are in securing the euro area.”
After 16 years as German Chancellor, Merkel is preparing to step down later this year.
She was replaced by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer at the head of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party after 18 years in this post.
Armin Laschet is now leader of the CDU.
Seen as a stable and analytical leader, she became the first female Chancellor of Germany in 2005.
