The Stansted airport boss hailed a change in England’s quarantine rules that allow passengers to avoid 10-day isolation after traveling from Orange List countries.

The rules changed on Monday August 2 and apply to those struck in the United States and countries of the European Union, as well as in Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco and the Vatican. A pre-trip test and a PCR test within two days of arrival are still required.

France is currently exempt from easing due to government concerns over the prevalence of the beta variant of Covid-19 in that country.

Charlie Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airports Group, owner of Stansted, which also operates Manchester and East Midlands airports, said: “This policy will allow millions of fully vaccinated people in the US and EU. to travel safely to the UK for a long-awaited vacation, business trip and reunion with family and friends after an incredibly difficult year.

“Even though the UK is more than a month ahead of most countries in terms of vaccinations, we are still more than a month behind in terms of opening up international travel. These changes will help bridge the gap. this gap by encouraging visitors to UK.

“But the government’s continued reluctance to be open with the data behind its decisions leaves us in the dark about what to expect next, and that uncertainty will hold the UK back against our competitors in the world. .

“The government needs to be more transparent in its approach, as the US and European governments have been, and give people more confidence to plan ahead without the risk of chaotic and sudden changes to the traffic light system.”

Double-stung passengers in the UK can travel from Orange List countries without quarantine since July 19.

Travelers returning from Green List countries – including Madeira, Croatia and Malta – do not have to self-isolate but must have a negative Covid-19 test before departure and take another test two days after arriving home .

Only UK or Irish nationals and UK residents can enter the UK from Red List countries including India, Pakistan, Turkey, Brazil and South Africa. All returning are required to self-isolate for 10 days in a government-approved quarantine hotel booked and paid for in advance at a cost of up to £ 1,750.

At Stansted, staff and passengers are encouraged to continue to wear masks. A spokesperson said: “The safety of customers and colleagues is our top priority.

“The government is clear that it expects and recommends that people continue to wear face coverings on public transport and in places where social distancing is not always possible. Therefore, we strongly recommend that everyone continues to do so in and around our terminals and office spaces.

“Customers should also be aware that many airlines will continue to require face coverings on board their planes, so they should check their carrier’s policy before arriving at the airport.

“In addition to advice on face coverings, we will keep all current public health measures in place at our airports for the foreseeable future, including improved cleaning and hand sanitizer. This, along with strict testing requirements or proof of vaccination required by passengers for international travel, will give people confidence that our airports are safe environments. “
