EU and UK reach agreement on quotas for joint fishing stock

The European Union said on Wednesday it has reached a fishing deal with the UK over their shared stocks, but environmentalists have insisted that even after Brexit the fish will continue to be overfished.

The deal stood out from the row between France and Britain over licenses for French fishermen to operate off the British crown dependencies of Jersey and Guernsey, which run along the French coast.

Wednesday’s decision reverts to last year’s trade deal between France and the UK and sets quotas and catch rights for around 100 fish stocks shared in each other’s waters.

“Thanks to goodwill and a constructive approach on both sides, we were able to reach an agreement that provides certainty for fishermen and women in the EU for the future,” said Slovenian Minister Jože PodgorÅ¡ek, who holds the presidency of the EU.

Even though a political fight was avoided, environmental groups insisted it was done at the cost of fish.

ClientEarth expert Jenni Grossmann said that “just like in the pre-Brexit era, they continued to prioritize short-term business interests over long-term sustainability for fish and fishermen. – perpetuating the disastrous state of these exhausted stocks “. She said iconic stocks like Celtic Sea and West Scotland cod would continue to linger on the brink of commercial extinction.
